The first founding father of the Jewish Nationwide Fund (JNF) established in 1901 on the Fifth Zionist Congress was Theodor Herzl.

Herzl was a visionary and instrumental in convincing the delegates on the Congress to determine a Fund to buy land for a Jewish state.

But, the same thought had been floated a few years earlier by Rabbi Yehuda Solomon Alkalai.

Born in Bosnia, the Sephardic Rabbi was an early forerunner of Zionism, regardless of the extra fashionable impression Zionism was an Ashkenazi creation.

Alkalai studied in Jerusalem the place he got here beneath the affect of the Kabbalah – Jewish mysticism.

In 1825 he grew to become Rabbi of a city named Zemun, a part of the town of Belgrade.

The city was positioned within the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the border of Ottoman occupied Serbia.

Many Jews fleeing tyranny from the Turks in Serbia fled to Belgrade, influencing Rabbi Alkalai to suppose the time had come for Jewish nationalism to reassert itself because the homeland for the Jewish individuals.

Alkalai shouldn’t be considered the daddy of contemporary Zionism.

He believed that the approaching of the Messiah can be hastened by the return of the Jews to their historic land of Israel, faraway from violent pogroms and hatred in lots of nations.

In urging varied nations to provide the Jews a homeland, he commented:

“Our salvation of Israel will come quickly from the kings of the earth for our repentance to the home of our mom.”

    Damascus Affair

In 1840 the Damascus blood libel vastly upset Alkalai.

The affair was a biased investigation by authorities officers from France and Egypt in Damascus, accusing the Jews of murdering a Christian monk and his servant to make use of the blood for Passover matzah.

Christian communities in Damascus supported the accusation.

The Damascus Affair additional elevated the Rabbi’s name for a return to Zion and in 1843 he printed a ebook “Minhat Yehuda.”

The ebook referred to as for the adoption of Hebrew as a nationwide language, buy of land in Palestine, and improvement of agriculture to type the premise of absorption of recent immigrants and encouragement of nationwide unity.

Rabbi Alkalai endeavoured to arrange a nationwide organisation just like the World Zionist Organisation to advertise his plan and persuade individuals it was practical.

Though he managed to established an workplace in London, the idea largely fell on deaf ears and the enterprise collapsed.

In 1874 Rabbi Alkalai and his spouse determined to settle in Palestine the place he established a settlement which sadly failed.

In 1878 he died in Jerusalem and is buried on the Mount of Olives.

In 1949 the moshav Rav Alkalai close to Ben Gurion airport was based by the Mizrachi motion. It’s a memorial to the visionary Rabbi whose contribution to fashionable Zionism is commonly missed.

The moshav was first created by immigrants from Hungary, later joined by olim from Yemen and Libya.

It’s attention-grabbing to remark that the grandfather of Theodor Herzl was a detailed good friend of Rabbi Alkalai.

Moreover, the unique plan of Rabbi Alkalai for the character of settlement in Palestine was intently adopted by Herzl and adopted in comparable vein.

Nevertheless it took 100 years to materialise.
