    Turkey and Australia confirm agreement on COP31 split-hosting deal

    BELEM, Brazil (Reuters) -Turkey will host the COP31 local weather summit in 2026 with Australia main the negotiation course of, a doc launched on the COP30 summit in Brazil confirmed on Friday, confirming an earlier announcement {that a} break up internet hosting association was anticipated.

    The assertion was issued by Germany after a gathering of the Western European and Others Group, which was tasked with deciding on the 2026 host.

    The deal, which resolved a prolonged standoff with each vying to host the U.N. local weather talks, set out that Turkey will function the venue whereas delegating negotiating obligations to Australia.

    “If there’s a distinction of views between Türkiye (Turkey) and Australia, consultations will happen till the distinction is resolved to mutual satisfaction,” the assertion mentioned.

    A pre-COP summit can be held in a Pacific Island nation, and Australia will lead the year-long course of that shapes the agenda and priorities forward of COP31.
