    Turkey set to host COP31 climate summit as deal with Australia takes shape

    BELEM, Brazil/CANBERRA (Reuters) -Turkey would host subsequent yr’s UN local weather summit whereas Australia would lead the convention’s negotiations amongst governments, beneath a compromise deal that three sources accustomed to the matter stated was taking form in talks on Thursday.

    Australia and Turkey each submitted bids in 2022 to host the annual COP, or Convention of the Events, the world’s primary discussion board for driving local weather motion.

    The 2 nations have been in a protracted battle to host, with neither prepared to again down.

    The compromise would give Turkey presidency of the summit and see a pre-COP occasion held within the Pacific, the sources stated, including that negotiations happening at COP30 in Brazil had not but formally concluded.

    Information of the compromise was first reported by Bloomberg.

    A spokesperson for Australia’s COP30 delegation declined to remark. Neither the Australian nor the Turkish governments instantly responded to requests for remark.
